Primary Education

Gaelic Medium Education at primary school level has grown substantially since it began in the 1980s and there are 2,256 pupils in primary schools at present (2009-2010).

There are 60 Gaelic units and schools in Scotland  and there are over 300 pupils (the largest Gaelic school roll in Scotland) in Glasgow's Gaelic Primary School alone.

With regard to the number of pupils in each year, it is encouraging that the larger numbers are between primary one and four according to the latest figures. Although most of the units and schools are in the local authority areas of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Highland Council and Argyll and Bute Council, there are others in the large cities in the east and south of Scotland.

Primary Education

Gaelic Medium Education is for every child – no exclusions! Children with no exposure to Gaelic previously are reported to do extremely well in learning Gaidhlig as they are immersed in the language from day 1! Immersion in Gaidhlig also helps children who are fluent in Gaidhlig to develop and extend their Gaidhlig.

In Primary school all subjects are taught through the medium of Gaidhlig. Schools also make links with local Gaidhlig communities so that the children have the opportunity to meet other Gaidhlig speakers. Links are also made with other Gaidhlig schools across the country.

Success aside, there is always improvement to be made. Steps are being taken by The Scottish Government, local authorities and Bòrd na Gàidhlig to ensure the growth of Gaelic Medium Education at primary level continues to thrive.

Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig are also working to keep up with the demand in Gaelic educational resources.  It’s not just teachers that benefit, parents, teachers, employers, businesses, tourism and effectively the economy all benefit from the rising numbers in Gaelic Primary Education.
